SOMEONE WAS crying loudly, probably a Siamese, but that cat hadn’t been brought to Tony to interact with. It was his day to do some time at the cat rescue instead of the office. He’d left Raven at home. Kittens were usually okay with dogs once they calmed down, and it wasn’t a bad idea to indoctrinate them to the idea of playing with dogs. Adult cats were usually less accommodating, and the idea was to relax the cats, not stress them out.

The cat tree in Purrfectly Wonderful’s sunroom was a literal tree, designed like a live oak, and easily stood seven feet. A wealthy donor had purchased it. Tony didn’t know how many cats were in the room exactly, so he moved slowly when he had to reposition himself. At the moment he rested with his back against the tree and two cats were climbing him instead, unfazed by how sweaty he’d become under all the windows.

Tony folded his arms around the fluffy ragdoll-type cat. She snuffled around his chin, probably smelling the burger he’d had for lunch. He’d gone early so the other workers could take theirs at noonish. Sara, one of the shelter workers, was with him, handling patrons at the front desk. The sun boiled through the window. How ridiculous was this room in the summer? At least it had air-conditioning.

Another cat dropped onto his shoulder and slithered over the ragdoll into his lap. Damn, this was a great job.

“Hey,” Javier called from the doorway.

“Lunch break?” Tony smiled over at him. An orange tiger beelined for Javier, who stooped down to pet him.

“Yep. Come with me.” Javier beckoned him.

Tony divested himself of his furry friends, picked up his cane, and stood. “What’s up?”

“We have a new intake you’ll want to play with.”

“Oh?”

“Mamma cat with four babies. They’re about four weeks old. Completely adorable. It’s a shame they won’t be ready for adoption when we have that Christmas drive later this week.”

“Oh right. Swing past the front desk—I have something for that,” Tony said.

“Sure.”

As “Jingle Bells” played softly in the background, Tony found the bag he’d stowed under the reception desk and presented it to Javier before following him deeper into the structure, where the quarantine cages were.

Javier plucked out a small crocheted Santa’s hat. “Do I want to know?”

“Nonna and her friends made Santa hats and elf collars for the adoptees,” Tony replied, partly proud and partly horrified at his grandmother’s initiative. “They think it’ll help if the cats are dressed for the holidays.”

Javier laughed. “It can’t hurt. Tell them we’re grateful.”

Once they were in the back room, Javier handed Tony a small blue-gray kitten.

Tony cuddled it close, and it mewled as he rubbed its head. “The hard part about this job is, I want to take them all home with me.” Tony kissed the top of the kitten’s head.

“I know. Me too. So, will you be able to help with the Christmas adoption drive?”

Tony nodded, scooping up a second kitten. Both of them squirmed against his chest.
